Choosing the best piel de sapo melon from all the ones in the store is not an easy task… In the same store you can find good pieces with other much weaker ones… Choosing a good melon is not an exact science, but in Peris we are going to give you some tips so you don’t fail, since we are specialists in piel de sapo melons and we have a very good eye for detecting the best ones.

The truth is that in Peris we save our customers the task of choosing melon, because we already do that role for them. All Peris labeled melons have gone through different stages of selection, at the time of planting, at the time of cutting and just before being shipped to a customer. Therefore, if you choose a Peris melon, rest assured that you will have taken home the best melon. But if you find yourself in the position of choosing a melon of another brand, or without a brand, here are some tips to try not to fail.

A good melon should be of medium weight and size.

The first thing you have to look at is its size and weight. Our recommendation is to choose a medium-sized melon, neither too big nor too small. Weigh it and try to get your melon to weigh between 3 and 4.5 kilos.

Choose a melon with a perfect shape, without skin damage.

Choose a melon that has a healthy external appearance, without bumps or wounds on the skin. Try to make it as perfect as possible in its shape, that is, without protuberances.

The yellow spot indicates the part that has been in contact with the soil while growing. Preferably, choose the melon that has that spot on the belly rather than the ends.

Touch it and feel it firm and heavy in your hands.

Tap it, does it feel firm? Then we are doing well. If you hold it in your hand and it feels dense and heavy, we go even better. With the touch you can also check if the ends are firm, although if you press it slightly (very slightly) yields. If that happens, you have a ripe melon on your hands, so it may be a good choice.

How to choose a good melon if you buy it in halves?

More and more consumers are choosing to buy a halved melon or watermelon. If that is your case, we are also going to give you a series of tips to help you choose the best possible melon half. To begin with, keep in mind the same guidelines we have given you for choosing a whole melon. But in this case, add four more.

1. Choose a melon that is well-fleshed inside, with little rind.

2. Try to ensure that there are no holes in the center, in the area of the seeds.

3. Look at the seeds. It is a good sign that you see the peculiar pulpilla around them, because that tells you that it is juicy and ripe.

4. Choose a half melon that is refrigerated. Unrefrigerated cut fruits can give rise to the appearance of pathogenic germs or their toxins and generate food poisoning.

How to prepare a melon?

You have already selected your melon, now it’s time to enjoy it. For this purpose, temperature is fundamental. We recommend do not consume it just out of the refrigerator, because if it is too cold you will lose flavor nuances. Take it out at least 15 minutes before eating. Cool, yes, but not frozen.

And now… let’s enjoy it!
